In Ancient times the influence of Cartagena was decisive in the region, although there were only some agricultural centers and some villages in the vicinity of the Via Augusta. After the fall of the Roman Empire, before the decline of this city, the influence became more dependent on the governments of cities such as Murcia and Orihuela. 
During the Middle Ages has been linked to events characteristic of this zone between the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon and its position along the Mar Menor. Alfonso X assigned this territory to the government of the Council of Murcia, however, the area was quite
unpopulated in the Middle Ages between the thirteenth and sixteenth towers were built, such as Horadada, the de Pinatar or the Rame, to warn of Berber incursions, which were quite frequent. 
The municipalities that make up this region belonged to the council of the city of Murcia in 1836 until the bodies were formed in independence, except Los Alcazares reaching independence in 1983.7 However, until the twentieth century is a major growth in population. 
After the creation of the autonomous community of Murcia, 8 was the region with the highest growth rate in the last ten years of the century.
