Since its inception the territory's economy was based primarily on agriculture and fishing. Agriculture is focused largely on the cultivation of wheat and barley. Already in the eighteenth century starts growing around the coastal area, stressing crops esparto the bank. 


In 1820, the municipality is formed, the first mayor Alonso Sanchez de Egea. Later, Ferdinand VII, San Javier Murcia membership again and loses its character of City Hall, recovering later in the year 1835. 

Today the economy is based mainly on tourism, highlighting the coastal towns of Santiago de la Ribera and La Manga del Mar Menor, and rural tourism in their localities inside.
